You may believe your work habits are unmatched, and they help you achieve your daily goals. But you may inadvertently have certain habits that hamper your ability to get your job done.

Bad work habits can develop quickly and without notice. Yet, if you can identify these habits, you can prevent them from becoming long-term issues.

Here are four bad work habits you should ditch immediately.

1. Procrastination

You may put off a work task until the last-possible moment but doing so can be problematic. For instance, if an emergency arises and interferes with your ability to get a task done on schedule, you could create serious problems for you and your employer.

Make a schedule and stick to it as best as you can. Daily, weekly, and monthly schedules can help you stay on track with work tasks. Additionally, if you believe you are falling behind on tasks, meet with your manager to explore ways to ensure tasks can be completed on time.

2. Skipping Work Breaks

You may want to work through your lunch break and other breaks throughout the day. However, your hunger pangs can make it difficult to focus on the task at hand. You may also struggle to maintain consistent energy if you forgo work breaks, and the quality of your work may suffer.

Take advantage of breaks during the day. Even spending a few minutes away from work can help you rejuvenate your body and mind. Then, when you return to work following a break, you’ll be good to go to get tasks done to the best of your ability.

3. Working While You’re Sick

You may believe “toughing it out” and working while you are sick shows you’re a team player. Conversely, working while you’re sick puts you and your coworkers in danger. In addition to making it difficult to stay focused on work, an illness can make it increasingly likely that you’ll make mistakes. If you are sick and work in an office, you may cause your coworkers to get sick, too.

If you feel sick, take time off from work. Your manager will understand if you need to request a personal day to recover from your illness. So, use a personal day to rest, and you can eventually return to work when you have made a full recovery from your illness.

4. Avoiding Company Events

You may forgo company events, especially if they are held outside of business hours. These events may seem long and arduous, but they can help you foster meaningful relationships with your coworkers. Plus, company events can be fun and exciting.

Attend company events whenever you can. In doing so, you can build relationships with coworkers — and may even establish new friendships. You can also contribute to a positive business culture that can benefit you and your coworkers going forward.
