5 Tips for Calming Your Nerves Before an Interview

A job interview can cause stress, even before it gets underway. The moments before an interview can be overwhelming, to the point where they can make you rethink your decision to interview for a job in the first place. But, if you know how to calm your nerves before an interview, you can relax, so that you can put your best foot forward.

Here are five tips to help you calm your nerves before an interview.

  1. Take a Walk

Walking can release endorphins, i.e., feel-good hormones, in the brain. If you go for a walk before your interview, you can alleviate your worries and stress about the meeting. Plus, you can feel good about yourself  and boost your chances of showing your interviewer the best version of yourself.

Before a phone or video interview, go for a walk outside, stroll around your home, or exercise on an elliptical or treadmill. Or, for an in-person interview, arrive early and walk around the surrounding area. Even a few minutes of walking can make a world of difference, and it can help you enter an interview feeling calm, cool, and collected.

  1. Enjoy Healthy Foods

Treat yourself to healthy foods before your interview. That way, you can fuel your body and mind and put your nerves at ease.

Blueberries, strawberries, and other foods loaded with antioxidants can give you an energy boost. You can also enjoy eggs, salmon, and other nutritious foods, which can help you feel your best when entering an interview.

  1. Reach Out for Support

Call or text a friend or family member before your interview. This allows you to share your concerns and worries with someone you trust and receive encouragement.

Friends and family members want you to succeed, and they can provide kind words to help you feel your best. So, if you reach out to a friend or family member, you may get the support you need to enter your interview feeling relaxed and confident.

  1. Listen to Music

Turn on the radio or listen to music on your smartphone or tablet. Listening to your favorite songs can help you take your mind off your interview and feel more relaxed than ever before.

You may want to listen to the energy that makes you feel energized and excited, too. This allows you to enter your interview with enthusiasm that can go a long way toward helping you land your dream job.

  1. Reward Yourself

Plan a fun activity to reward yourself after your interview. Then, you can focus on this fun activity as you enter your interview.

Remind yourself that you’ll be able to enjoy a fun activity following your interview, regardless of what happens during the meeting. In doing so, you can shift your focus away from the stress of interviewing for a job, and instead, focus on the fact that you’ll be able to enjoy a fun activity after your interview is done.
