Tips to Get Organized and On Track This Summer

Summer is here, you’re at work, and you may not feel your most productive as you think of coworkers who are on vacation, enjoying their free time traveling or lolling on a beach somewhere. But until it’s your turn to take that coveted time off, why not make the best of it?

Unless you work in a seasonal industry where summer is peak time, chances are things are slower than average right now. With that in mind, what better time to take a beat and really get organized, so you’re ready to hit the ground running when things pick up again in September?

Here are some tips for organizing your physical workspace. Once you complete them, you’ll feel better all around, as you experience the connection between decluttering tangible things and mental clarity.

A place for everything and everything in its place.

This includes getting rid of as much paper as possible. In today’s digital world, there’s no excuse for mountains of memos and notes all over your desk. Renew your commitment to the environment this summer by recycling whatever you can. Get rid of any other clutter as well, whether it’s extra office supplies, coffee mugs or anything else you don’t need. Keep only the essentials – and organize it all neatly. Then, make a point of doing this for five minutes every day, so you don’t wind up right back where you started.

Junk the junk mail.

When you become overwhelmed with the countless emails that clog your inbox, make this your mantra: Hit delete. Keep necessary messages, but file them in designated folders.

  • It may take a few extra steps initially, but unsubscribing from any newsletters or email lists that truly don’t bring you value is well worth it in the long run.

Reorganize your schedule.

There are two key words here, too: One calendar. Find the system that works best for you, where you can easily access all your meetings, obligations and commitments. Good old-school paper is fine if you prefer, or use your smartphone or one of the many digital calendar options available.

Foster relationships with your coworkers.

There may not be as much time to socialize or even chat casually over coffee during the rest of the year. But now may be a great time to get to know your colleagues better. If your company doesn’t have an annual summer outing, plan something – even if it’s as simple as an outdoor Friday Happy Hour. You’ll have fun memories, stories, and closer relationships to carry with you throughout the year.
